Perle I/O and Connectivity Products

Perle Systems is a connectivity solutions provider focusing on the design and manufacture of computer peripheral products specifically for multi-user and networked systems. Since its founding in 1986, Perle Systems has rapidly established itself as a leading pioneer in the specialty input/output (I/O) area of the open systems market. Perle's first product, the Perle AT8, the first intelligent I/O board available in Europe both helped create a new market for the PC and in 1987, became an industry standard product.

Later products, the IOPRO, AT-FAST, PCI-FAST, IOXTRA and PCI-RAS with their improved circuitry, new features and better utilization of system resources continued continue to provide end-users with a straightforward and cost-effective means to expand the potential of their systems. The multi-user capabilities of these board-level terminal controllers have now been augmented by Perle's more sophisticated network-based products such as the IOLAN terminal server and IOPRINT network print server.

In 1992, Perle entered the WAN (Wide Area Networks) arena of products connecting remote PC's and networks. The emergent communications technology is ISDN, which represents a significant advantage over analog/modem options. The Perle range of ISDN products includes ISDN terminal adapters, PC cards, bridge/routers. High speed I/O devices, the IOXTRA and AT-FAST are designed to allow the user to keep up with the speeds provided by the ISDN products.

A truly international company, Perle Systems was honored to win the Queen's Award For Export Achievement in 1992 and again in 1995.

Perle Systems's commitment to quality at every level of the company is reflected in our ISO 9001 quality accreditation. The level of confidence we have in our products is such that we can give a lifetime warranty.

PCI-FAST & AT-FAST Multiports For SCO & NT

Perle's new PCI-FAST is a multiport card for building remote access systems on Windows NT and SCO UNIX environments. Its PCI bus interface allows the ATFAST to take advantage of a 64-bit access path and can sustain ports at 460KBps for up to 16 ports.

Perle Systems also offers the AT-FAST, new high-speed multiport boards for remote access I/O applications. Based on the 16C654 UART and using 64-byte buffers, the AT-FAST is capable of speeds up to 460kbaud. The AT-FAST uses a single IRQ and no shared memory to conserve system resources. It is ISA or EISA bus compatible and requires 1 expansion slot per AT-FAST. Custom drivers are supplied to access the higher port speeds on SCO, Windows and NT systems. AT-FAST is available in 4, 8 or 16 port versions with RJ-45 connectors for the 4-port, RJ-45 and DB25 for the 8-port and DB25 for the 16-port.

AT-FAST can be used in a wide variety of environments where fast transfer speeds are important. Applications include centralized digital/analog modem pooling (4 and 8-port versions) for Internet or SOHO service, point-of-sale systems, terminals and data collection. An excellent use would be using the AT-FAST in connection with ISDN or Dialup high-speed modems or CSU/DSU. Using AT-FAST, your serial connection no longer needs to be a bottle-neck.

ETHERNET Terminal Servers

The Perle IO LAN+, IO LAN Terminal, Communications Servers

IOLAN+ Terminal Server

A terminal server versus a serial connection device, is attached to a system via a Ethernet network. In the case of the Perle IOLAN+ , you have the choice of 8 or 16-port terminal servers. Each terminal server has it's own IP address assigned by the user and UNIX sees the individual ports as pseudo ttys. The point to point communications is handled through the telnet or rlogin service programs under TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol). As part of a distributed systems environment, IOLAN enables serial devices to have access to and be accessed by any other device on the network. This facility allows terminals to log on to any host connected to the network and for network users to access printers and bi-directional modems connected to the terminal server.

Though more expensive than serial connection devices, terminal servers are usually the most efficient. With the use of repeaters, bridges and routers, the actual number of terminal servers can be unlimited. Plus, the distance between a terminal server and a host can be up to 1600 feet. Using repeaters you can extend that up to a mile.

Perle IOLAN+ Communications Server Technical Data Sheet

IOLAN+ is a feature rich Ethernet TCP/IP communications server which enables serial devices to be connected directly to LANs. The serial devices can be terminals, printers, modems, PPP/SLIP lines or any other RS232 device. IOLAN+ is a hardware enhancement to the current IOLAN product, which includes an Internal POwer Supply Unit(PSU), Flash memory, Twisted pair and a faster CPU.

Perle has enhanced the IOLAN+ by adding RADIUS compatibility, which provides connect services on a per user versus a per port basis. Users dialing into any port will get their same services via a user database regardless of which port they log in through. This increases the versatility of the IOLAN, greatly simplifying user connections.

Architecture

IOLAN+ is used wherever serial devices need to be connected to LANs. IOLAN+ uses a standard Ethernet physical connection and TCP/IP for the software connection. IOLAN+ conforms to the most · Modems commonly used standards and offers a flexible method for serial connection.

Serial connections using RS232 enable IOLAN+ to connect to a wide range of devices. IOLAN+ implements the full nine pin connection on both the DB25 and the RJ45 connectors, which many other vendors ignore. This allows even the most complex devices such as high speed modems to be connected directly to the IOLAN+ and fully controlled without loss of data or performance even at 115.2 kbaud.

IOLAN+ uses flash memory to permanently store firmware, this allows software upgrades to be downloaded only once.

Applications

IOLAN+'s flexibility allows a large number of applications to be accessed, from workgroup computing to remote access. Typical devices that are connected include:

Performance

IOLAN+ has the performance you need to handle a diverse range of high speed devices in complex applications environments. IOLAN+ can transmit and receive data at speeds of up to 115.2 kbaud. This allows high - performance devices to function at their full speed.

To achieve this high speed and to maintain a high throughput, IOLAN+ utilizes the performance of RISC based CD 180 UARTS in combination with highly tuned firmware.

Easy Installation

IOLAN+ setup can be performed in a matter of minutes using our unique menuing system. A minimum configuration requires only the IP address to be set. For installations requiring further set up, the IOLAN+ will assist you in stepping through the additional configuration options including port speeds, flow control, security and SLIP connections.

Reliability is the single most important aspect of any network device. All serial line ports have surge protection devices to protect the unit from electrical surges. IOLAN+ comes with a lifetime warranty (as does every Perle product). This is a practical demonstration of faith in both the build quality and design of the product.

Flexibility

IOLAN+ can provide users with up to four network connections per port, with a maximum of 64 connections per 16 port IOLAN+. Ports can be configured for dedicated connections to a pre-selected host for security and for ease of use. Users can select between 10 pre-configured hosts or use DNS support to reach others.

Management

Administrators can simply gain access to any IOLAN+ on the network using Telnet. This important facility allows easy remote configuration and diagnostics. IOLAN+ also supports the SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) at MIB 1, MIB II, Character MIB and Perle specific enterprise variables. Using SNMP, the network or system administrator can monitor conditions on the network, often anticipating problems and correcting them before the user has noticed.

Printing and Modem Support

IOLAN+ is a versatile printer and modem server. Printing devices can be configured as local printers on a UNIX host using the Perle supplied software. Alternatively, the RCP or LPD protocol can be used, enabling IOLAN+ to act as a remote print queue. This allows any system on the network to interlace printouts on one print queue or access a hunt group. The high bandwidth provided by IOLAN+ makes it the right choice for all types of printer connection.

Modems and other bi-directional devices are configured as local UNIX ports, using a combination of Perle utilities and reverse telnet. This allows programs such as cu, uucp, kermit and any communications packages to use IOLAN+ ports without modification. IOLAN+ is a perfect platform for modem pooling, not only because of its high speed but also the enhanced security.

Security

Individual ports can be password protected in one of two ways. Users may be authenticated with a valid host, where user names and passwords are required. Once authenticated, users may use the standard features such as Telnet, Rlogin or PPP. Alternatively, for easier access the IOLAN+ uses a general password for all ports. Administration is password protected.

Remote Access

IOLAN+ provides multi port remote access using PPP, SLIP or CSLIP protocols. All ports provide dial in and dial out access. Dial in provides authentication security and records duration of calls for billing purposes to a log host. Dial out, routes selected addresses off the network and will establish a modem/TA link to a remote site. The PPP (RFC 1548 and backwards compatible with RFC 1331, 1332 and 1334) communicates successfully with popular remote access products such as Spry's remote access, Chameleon, PC/TCP, TUN TCP and others.

Communications

One of IOLAN+'s strong features is Reverse Telnet. Reverse Telnet allows a Unix system to access a remote serial port as though the port were a physical port on the UNIX box. The feature is greatly enhanced by the free host software provided known as 'ioland'. Ioland provides a seamless interface to the IOLAN+ serial ports.

A Success Story

Perle likes to quote the Jamaican Ministry Of Finance as an example of how best to use terminal servers. The problem was word processing and a custom accounting system on 3 UNIX microcomputers that needed to be shared by 100s of users in 6 buildings. The problem was solved by 24 terminal servers, 36 printers, over 100 terminals, 600' of thick Ethernet cable, 6,000' of thin Ethernet cable, and 18,000' of RS232 cable.
